Traffic was its usual crazy pace as I turned on the radio in my car, a welcome addition to my short, albeit hectic morning drive to work.
Listening to one of our local Christian radio stations, I find their contemporary approach to their shows uplifting.
One of the hosts, I met years ago when writing an article about radio.
The question of the day was this:
Who do you admire and why?
Mind blown at 7 a.m., I was like wow, there are quite a few people who inspire me.
I hear other people say the world is going to "hell in a hand basket," yet in my journalism career, a side blessing is meeting all kinds of people who make good use of their time and talent to help others.
Where do I start with this question?
I admire all of my kids because they are out there in the world kicking it .. raising families and making the world a better place.
I admire my best friend because she is everything a good person is .. kind, truthful, loyal, creative, funny, and she always believes the best in people.
Then there are others whose names I won't mention .. one friend is up every day at 5 to make breakfast for her family, have her quiet time and do a few household chores before work.
Another friend is one I have called "elegant." When she reads this, she will know it's her. Kind, exact, respectful, dedicated and very much a classy lady. And she works out. (Something I am working on.)
I think of my sweet friends, a couple who is just heaven on earth. I have known her since her grandchildren and my children were young.
There's the friend, a former coworker, who is the best Christian lady .. she loves Jesus and others .. and in this world today, she's trying to help others keep their focus on Him.
Another friend helped me out in a tight spot, and I still owe him a pot roast. He loves to make jokes, but you won't find a better gentlemen who is sincere and listens.
There is not enough room in this post to list everyone who inspires me.
Family, friends, coworkers, leaders in the community and area churches.
One thing I realized this week is that there is a difference between being a fan of someone and admiring them. We tend to flock to a fan base because there is something that is offered that we want to hear, see or experience again.
Yet admiration is deeper.
We see qualities in that person or people that we need in our lives.
Compassion
Organization
Creativity
Time management
Prioritization
And more.
So the question again is this.
Who do we admire, and why?
The sun is coming up again, and I've got another day to go out into the world and write people's stories.
The rooster next door is crowing.
Time to get a move on my to do list for today.
